About angular velocity units

Angular velocity is how fast something rotates: the angle turned per unit of time. Its SI unit is the radian per second (rad/s).

One revolution is exactly 2π radians or 360 degrees. That gives 1 rpm = π/30 rad/s (about 0.10472 rad/s) and exactly 6 degrees per second. Note that 1 revolution per second is a rotation frequency of 1 Hz but an angular velocity of 2π rad/s.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert rpm to rad/s?
Multiply by π/30, about 0.10472. To go from rad/s to rpm, multiply by 30/π, about 9.5493.
How many degrees per second is 1 rpm?
Exactly 6 degrees per second: 360 degrees divided by 60 seconds.
How many degrees per second are in one radian per second?
One radian per second ≈ 57.29577951 °/s (degrees per second).
How many revolutions per second are in one radian per second?
One radian per second ≈ 0.1591549431 rev/s (revolutions per second).
How many revolutions per minute are in one radian per second?
One radian per second ≈ 9.549296586 rpm (revolutions per minute).
