About pressure units

Pressure is force per area. The SI unit is the pascal, one newton per square meter. Because a pascal is small, kilopascals and megapascals are common, and the bar is exactly 100,000 Pa.

The standard atmosphere is exactly 101,325 Pa. Torr is defined as 1/760 of an atmosphere, which is very close to, but not exactly, one millimeter of mercury.

Frequently asked questions

Does this converter handle psig and psia?
It converts the numbers but does not change the reference. Gauge pressure (psig) is measured relative to the surrounding air; absolute pressure (psia) is measured from vacuum. Convert 30 psig and you get gauge kilopascals, not absolute.
Is 1 bar the same as 1 atmosphere?
Close, but no. 1 bar is 100,000 Pa and 1 standard atmosphere is 101,325 Pa, so 1 atm is exactly 1.01325 bar.
How many kilopascals are in one pascal?
One pascal = 0.001 kPa (kilopascals).
How many megapascals are in one pascal?
One pascal = 0.000001 MPa (megapascals).
How many bars are in one pascal?
One pascal = 0.00001 bar (bars).
