About data transfer units

Data transfer rate is the amount of data moved per unit of time. Network speeds are usually given in bits per second (kbit/s, Mbit/s, Gbit/s), while file downloads and disk speeds are often shown in bytes per second (MB/s).

Because a byte is 8 bits, divide a bit rate by 8 to get the byte rate: 100 Mbit/s is 12.5 MB/s. Some tools show binary rates (MiB/s, 1,048,576 bytes per second) but label them "MB/s".

Frequently asked questions

Is Mbps the same as MB/s?
No. Mbps means megabits per second and MB/s means megabytes per second. 1 MB/s is 8 Mbps, so a 100 Mbps connection moves at most 12.5 MB/s.
How long does it take to download 1 GB at 100 Mbps?
At least 80 seconds: 1 GB is 8,000 megabits, and 8,000 ÷ 100 = 80. Real downloads take longer because of protocol overhead and network conditions.
How many kilobits per second are in one bit per second?
One bit per second = 0.001 kbit/s (kilobits per second).
How many megabits per second are in one bit per second?
One bit per second = 0.000001 Mbit/s (megabits per second).
How many gigabits per second are in one bit per second?
One bit per second = 1e-9 Gbit/s (gigabits per second).
