About dry volume units

Dry volume units measure loose solids such as grain, fruit and vegetables. They measure volume, like liquid units, but the US dry measures are a separate system based on the bushel of exactly 2150.42 cubic inches (about 35.24 L).

US dry and liquid measures with the same name differ: a US dry gallon is 268.8025 cubic inches, about 16% larger than the 231 cubic inch liquid gallon. Imperial pecks and bushels are based on the imperial gallon, so an imperial bushel (36.36872 L) is about 3.2% larger than a US bushel.

Frequently asked questions

How many liters are in a US bushel?
Exactly 35.23907016688 liters, from the definition of 2150.42 cubic inches.
Can I convert bushels to pounds?
Not with a single factor. A bushel is a volume, and its weight depends on the crop. US trade uses standard weights per bushel, for example 60 lb for wheat and 56 lb for shelled corn.
Is a dry pint the same as a liquid pint?
No. A US dry pint is about 0.551 L, while a US liquid pint is about 0.473 L.
How many liters are in one cubic meter?
One cubic meter = 1000 L (liters).
How many US dry quarts are in one cubic meter?
One cubic meter ≈ 908.0829843 dry qt (US dry quarts).
How many US pecks are in one cubic meter?
One cubic meter ≈ 113.510373 pk (US pecks).
