About digital image resolution units

Image resolution, in this sense, is how many dots or pixels fit into a given length. Printers and scanners use dots per inch (dpi), screens and digital images use pixels per inch (ppi), and metric documents use dots per centimeter or millimeter. An inch is exactly 2.54 cm, so 300 dpi is about 118.11 dots per centimeter.

Dpi and ppi share the same scale, but they describe different things. Ppi counts the pixels of an image or screen; dpi counts the ink or toner dots a printer places, and a printer may use several dots to render one pixel. The resolution number alone does not change the pixel count of an image; it only sets how large it prints.

Frequently asked questions

Is dpi the same as ppi?
Numerically they convert 1 to 1, since both count items per inch. In practice ppi refers to image or screen pixels and dpi to printed dots, which are not always the same thing.
How many dots per centimeter is 300 dpi?
About 118.11 dots per centimeter: 300 ÷ 2.54. In dots per millimeter it is about 11.81.
What is 8 dots per millimeter in dpi?
Exactly 203.2 dpi (8 × 25.4). This resolution is common on label and thermal printers, usually listed as 203 dpi.
How many dots per centimeter are in one dot per meter?
One dot per meter = 0.01 dot/cm (dots per centimeter).
How many dots per millimeter are in one dot per meter?
One dot per meter = 0.001 dot/mm (dots per millimeter).
How many dots per inch are in one dot per meter?
One dot per meter = 0.0254 dpi (dots per inch).
