Radiation Dose (Equivalent) units
Every unit below converts to every other one in the calculator. Values are relative to the base unit, the sievert (Sv).
| Unit | Symbol | System | Value |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sievert | Sv | SI | Base unit |
| Millisievert | mSv | SI | = 0.001 Sv |
| Microsievert | µSv | SI | = 0.000001 Sv |
| Rem | rem | other | = 0.01 Sv |
| Millirem | mrem | other | = 0.00001 Sv |
Sievert quick reference
| Sievert | Millisievert | Microsievert | Rem |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 Sv | = 1000 mSv | = 1000000 µSv | = 100 rem |
| 10 Sv | = 10000 mSv | = 10000000 µSv | = 1000 rem |
| 100 Sv | = 100000 mSv | = 100000000 µSv | = 10000 rem |
| 1000 Sv | = 1000000 mSv | = 1000000000 µSv | = 100000 rem |
Among the 5 radiation dose (equivalent) units on this page, the smallest is the microsievert (µSv) and the largest is the sievert (Sv).

About radiation dose (equivalent) units
Equivalent and effective dose describe the biological effect of ionizing radiation on the body. The SI unit is the sievert (Sv). Everyday values are small, so millisieverts (mSv) and microsieverts (µSv) are common; natural background radiation is a few mSv per year.
The older rem is still used in the United States: 1 rem is exactly 0.01 Sv, so 1 Sv = 100 rem and 1 mrem = 10 µSv. The sievert is not the same as the gray, which measures absorbed energy. Getting sieverts from grays needs a radiation weighting factor for the type of radiation, which this converter does not apply.
Frequently asked questions
- How many rem are in a sievert?
- Exactly 100. One rem is 0.01 Sv, and one millirem is 10 µSv.
- Can I convert gray to sievert?
- Not with a single factor. The gray measures absorbed energy, while the sievert includes a weighting for the biological effect of the radiation type. For X-rays and gamma rays the weighting factor is 1; for alpha particles and neutrons it is higher. Use the absorbed dose converter for grays.
- How many millisieverts are in one sievert?
- One sievert = 1000 mSv (millisieverts).
- How many microsieverts are in one sievert?
- One sievert = 1000000 µSv (microsieverts).
- How many rem are in one sievert?
- One sievert = 100 rem (rem).
