Temperature Interval units

Every unit below converts to every other one in the calculator. Values are relative to the base unit, the kelvin (difference) (ΔK).

Temperature Interval units and their value in kelvin (difference)s
UnitSymbolValue
Kelvin (difference)ΔKBase unit
Degree Celsius (difference)Δ°C= 1 ΔK
Degree Fahrenheit (difference)Δ°F≈ 0.5555555556 ΔK
Degree Rankine (difference)Δ°R≈ 0.5555555556 ΔK

Kelvin (difference) quick reference

Kelvin (difference) in other temperature interval units
Kelvin (difference)Degree Celsius (difference)Degree Fahrenheit (difference)
1 ΔK= 1 Δ°C= 1.8 Δ°F
10 ΔK= 10 Δ°C= 18 Δ°F
100 ΔK= 100 Δ°C= 180 Δ°F
1000 ΔK= 1000 Δ°C= 1800 Δ°F

Among the 4 temperature interval units on this page, the smallest is the degree fahrenheit (difference) (Δ°F) and the largest is the degree celsius (difference) (Δ°C).

About temperature interval units

A temperature interval is the difference between two temperatures, such as a rise of 20 degrees or the gap between the inlet and outlet of a heat exchanger. Its SI unit is the kelvin. Only the size of the degree matters, so no offset is involved, unlike converting thermometer readings.

A change of 1 °C is exactly 1 K, and a change of 1 °F is exactly 1 °R, or 5/9 K. So a difference in °C is multiplied by 1.8 to get °F, without adding 32. Use this page for ranges, tolerances and temperature rises, and the temperature converter for readings.

Frequently asked questions

Why is a change of 10 °C a change of 18 °F, not 50 °F?
50 °F is the reading that matches 10 °C. A change of 10 °C is a change of 10 × 1.8 = 18 °F, because the 32-degree offset cancels out when you subtract one temperature from another.
Is a difference of 1 K the same as 1 °C?
Yes. The kelvin and the degree Celsius are exactly the same size, so temperature differences have the same number in both units.
How do I convert a temperature difference from °F to °C?
Multiply by 5/9 (or divide by 1.8). A rise of 27 °F is a rise of exactly 15 °C.
How many degrees Celsius (difference) are in one kelvin (difference)?
One kelvin (difference) = 1 Δ°C (degrees Celsius (difference)).
How many degrees Fahrenheit (difference) are in one kelvin (difference)?
One kelvin (difference) = 1.8 Δ°F (degrees Fahrenheit (difference)).
