About typography units
Typography uses small length units for font sizes, line spacing and column widths. The modern desktop publishing point is exactly 1/72 inch, and a pica is 12 points, or 1/6 inch.
In CSS, one pixel is exactly 1/96 inch, so 1 pt = 4/3 px and 12 pt = 16 px. The traditional printer's point (0.013837 inch) is slightly smaller than the desktop point: 72 printer's points are 0.996264 inch.
