Every unit below converts to every other one in the calculator. Values are relative to the base unit, the farad (F).
| Unit | Symbol | System | Value |
|---|---|---|---|
| Farad | F | SI | Base unit |
| Millifarad | mF | SI | = 0.001 F |
| Microfarad | µF | SI | = 0.000001 F |
| Nanofarad | nF | SI | = 1e-9 F |
| Picofarad | pF | SI | = 1e-12 F |
| Abfarad | abF | CGS | = 1000000000 F |
| Statfarad | statF | CGS | ≈ 1.112650056e-12 F |
Farad quick reference
| Farad | Microfarad | Nanofarad | Picofarad |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 F | = 1000000 µF | = 1000000000 nF | = 1000000000000 pF |
| 10 F | = 10000000 µF | = 10000000000 nF | = 10000000000000 pF |
| 100 F | = 100000000 µF | = 100000000000 nF | = 100000000000000 pF |
| 1000 F | = 1000000000 µF | = 1000000000000 nF | = 1e+15 pF |
Among the 7 capacitance units on this page, the smallest is the picofarad (pF) and the largest is the abfarad (abF).

About capacitance units
Capacitance is the ability to store electric charge per volt. Its SI unit is the farad (F): one coulomb of charge per volt. The farad is large, so most capacitors are rated in µF, nF or pF.
Capacitor markings often skip between prefixes: 1 µF is 1000 nF and 1 nF is 1000 pF. Ceramic capacitors coded "104" mean 10 × 10⁴ pF, which is 100 nF or 0.1 µF.
Frequently asked questions
- How many nanofarads are in a microfarad?
- Exactly 1000 nF. One microfarad is also 1,000,000 pF.
- What does "MFD" mean on a capacitor?
- On motor-run and AC capacitors, MFD (or mfd) is an old marking for microfarads, not millifarads. A 45 MFD capacitor is 45 µF.
- How many microfarads are in one farad?
- One farad = 1000000 µF (microfarads).
- How many nanofarads are in one farad?
- One farad = 1000000000 nF (nanofarads).
- How many picofarads are in one farad?
- One farad = 1000000000000 pF (picofarads).
