About electric charge units
Electric charge is a property of particles such as electrons and protons. Its SI unit is the coulomb (C): the charge moved by a current of one ampere in one second. The elementary charge, the charge of one proton, is exactly 1.602176634 × 10⁻¹⁹ C.
Battery capacity is often given in ampere-hours or milliampere-hours. These measure charge, not energy: 1 Ah is exactly 3600 C and 1 mAh is exactly 3.6 C. To get energy you also need the battery voltage.
Frequently asked questions
- How many coulombs are in 1 mAh?
- Exactly 3.6 coulombs. One milliampere flowing for 3600 seconds moves 0.001 × 3600 = 3.6 C. One ampere-hour is exactly 3600 C.
- How do I convert mAh to Wh?
- Multiply by the voltage and divide by 1000: Wh = mAh × V ÷ 1000. A 3000 mAh battery at a nominal 3.7 V stores about 11.1 Wh. This converter cannot do it without the voltage, because mAh is charge and Wh is energy.
- How many electrons make one coulomb?
- About 6.241509 × 10¹⁸ elementary charges, which is 1 divided by 1.602176634 × 10⁻¹⁹.
- How many ampere-hours are in one coulomb?
- One coulomb ≈ 0.0002777777778 Ah (ampere-hours).
- How many milliampere-hours are in one coulomb?
- One coulomb ≈ 0.2777777778 mAh (milliampere-hours).
