About data storage units
Data is counted in bits (binary digits) and bytes. A byte is 8 bits. Larger units use either decimal SI prefixes, where 1 kB is 1000 bytes, or binary IEC prefixes, where 1 KiB is 1024 bytes.
The gap grows with size: 1 GB is about 0.931 GiB and 1 TB is about 0.909 TiB. Drive makers use decimal units, while many operating systems show binary values labeled "GB". Lowercase b usually means bits and uppercase B means bytes.
Frequently asked questions
- Why does my 1 TB drive show about 931 GB?
- The drive holds 1,000,000,000,000 bytes (decimal). The operating system divides by 1024³ and shows about 931.32 GiB, labeled as "GB". No space is missing.
- Is a kilobyte 1000 or 1024 bytes?
- On this site, a kilobyte (kB) is 1000 bytes, as in the SI. 1024 bytes is a kibibyte (KiB). Some software still uses "KB" for 1024 bytes.
- How many bits are in a byte?
- Eight. A byte of 8 bits is also called an octet.
- How many bytes are in one bit?
- One bit = 0.125 B (bytes).
- How many megabits are in one bit?
- One bit = 0.000001 Mbit (megabits).
- How many megabytes are in one bit?
- One bit = 1.25e-7 MB (megabytes).
