Dynamic Viscosity units
Every unit below converts to every other one in the calculator. Values are relative to the base unit, the pascal second (Pa·s).
| Unit | Symbol | System | Value |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pascal second | Pa·s | SI | Base unit |
| Millipascal second | mPa·s | SI | = 0.001 Pa·s |
| Poise | P | CGS | = 0.1 Pa·s |
| Centipoise | cP | CGS | = 0.001 Pa·s |
| Pound per foot second | lb/(ft·s) | US customary | ≈ 1.488163944 Pa·s |
| Pound-force second per square foot | lbf·s/ft² | US customary | ≈ 47.88025898 Pa·s |
| Reyn | reyn | US customary | ≈ 6894.757293 Pa·s |
Pascal second quick reference

|---|---|---|---|
| 1 Pa·s | = 10 P | = 1000 cP | ≈ 0.6719689751 lb/(ft·s) |
| 10 Pa·s | = 100 P | = 10000 cP | ≈ 6.719689751 lb/(ft·s) |
| 100 Pa·s | = 1000 P | = 100000 cP | ≈ 67.19689751 lb/(ft·s) |
| 1000 Pa·s | = 10000 P | = 1000000 cP | ≈ 671.9689751 lb/(ft·s) |
Among the 7 dynamic viscosity units on this page, the smallest is the millipascal second (mPa·s) and the largest is the reyn (reyn).

About dynamic viscosity units
Dynamic (absolute) viscosity measures a fluid's resistance to flow under shear: the shear stress needed for a given velocity gradient. Its SI unit is the pascal second (Pa·s). Water at 20 °C is about 1 mPa·s, which is 1 cP.
One cP is exactly 1 mPa·s, and one poise is exactly 0.1 Pa·s. US units come in two kinds: the mass-based lb/(ft·s), about 1.4882 Pa·s, and the force-based lbf·s/ft², about 47.880 Pa·s. Dividing dynamic viscosity by density gives kinematic viscosity (cSt), which is a different quantity.
Frequently asked questions
- Is centipoise the same as mPa·s?
- Yes. One centipoise is exactly one millipascal second, so the numbers are identical. 1 Pa·s is 1000 cP.
- How do I convert cP to cSt?
- Divide by the density in g/cm³. An oil of 50 cP with a density of 0.88 g/cm³ is about 56.8 cSt. Water, at about 1 g/cm³, has nearly the same number in both.
- How many poise are in one pascal second?
- One pascal second = 10 P (poise).
- How many centipoise are in one pascal second?
- One pascal second = 1000 cP (centipoise).
- How many pounds per foot second are in one pascal second?
- One pascal second ≈ 0.6719689751 lb/(ft·s) (pounds per foot second).
