About mass flow units

Mass flow rate is the mass of material that passes a point per unit of time. Its SI unit is the kilogram per second (kg/s). Unlike volume flow, it does not change with temperature or pressure, so it is preferred for steam, gases and fuels.

One lb/h is exactly 0.45359237 kg/h, and 1 kg/h is about 2.2046 lb/h. One tonne per hour is exactly 1000 kg/h, about 0.27778 kg/s. Converting to a volume flow needs the fluid density, so this page converts only between mass flow units.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert lb/h to kg/h?
Multiply by 0.45359237 (exact). For example, 1000 lb/h of steam is about 453.6 kg/h.
How do I convert mass flow to volume flow?
Divide by the density. Water at about 1000 kg/m³ flowing at 1 kg/s is about 0.001 m³/s, or 1 L/s.
How many kilograms per hour are in one kilogram per second?
One kilogram per second = 3600 kg/h (kilograms per hour).
How many tonnes per hour are in one kilogram per second?
One kilogram per second = 3.6 t/h (tonnes per hour).
How many pounds per second are in one kilogram per second?
One kilogram per second ≈ 2.204622622 lb/s (pounds per second).
