About molar concentration units

Molar concentration (molarity) is the amount of dissolved substance per volume of solution. Its SI unit is the mole per cubic meter (mol/m³), but chemistry and medicine mostly use moles per liter: 1 M = 1 mol/L = 1000 mol/m³, and 1 mmol/L equals exactly 1 mol/m³.

Converting to a mass concentration such as mg/dL needs the molar mass of the substance. For glucose (about 180.16 g/mol), 1 mmol/L is about 18.0 mg/dL. Molarity (per liter of solution) is not the same as molality (per kilogram of solvent).

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert mmol/L to mg/dL?
Multiply by the molar mass in g/mol and divide by 10. For glucose (about 180.16 g/mol), 5.5 mmol/L is about 99 mg/dL.
What does 1 M mean?
One molar: one mole of solute per liter of solution, which is exactly 1000 mol/m³. 1 mM is one millimole per liter.
Is molarity the same as molality?
No. Molarity is moles per liter of solution; molality is moles per kilogram of solvent (mol/kg). They are close only for dilute water solutions.
How many moles per liter are in one mole per cubic meter?
One mole per cubic meter = 0.001 mol/L (moles per liter).
How many millimoles per liter are in one mole per cubic meter?
One mole per cubic meter = 1 mmol/L (millimoles per liter).
How many micromoles per liter are in one mole per cubic meter?
One mole per cubic meter = 1000 µmol/L (micromoles per liter).
