About electric resistivity units
Electrical resistivity is a property of a material: how strongly it opposes current regardless of the object's shape. Its SI unit is the ohm-meter (Ω·m). A wire's resistance is its resistivity times its length divided by its cross-sectional area.
Different fields use different units. Metals are often given in µΩ·cm (copper is about 1.7 µΩ·cm), wire tables in Ω·mm²/m or, in the United States, Ω·cmil/ft. Semiconductors and soil use Ω·cm. One Ω·mm²/m is exactly 1 µΩ·m.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I convert µΩ·cm to Ω·m?
- Multiply by 10⁻⁸. For example, 1.7 µΩ·cm is 1.7 × 10⁻⁸ Ω·m.
- What is an ohm circular mil per foot?
- A US wire unit: the resistance in ohms of a wire one foot long with a cross-section of one circular mil. One Ω·mm²/m is about 601.53 Ω·cmil/ft.
- How many microohm-centimeters are in one ohm-meter?
- One ohm-meter = 100000000 µΩ·cm (microohm-centimeters).
- How many ohm square millimeters per meter are in one ohm-meter?
- One ohm-meter = 1000000 Ω·mm²/m (ohm square millimeters per meter).
- How many ohm circular mils per foot are in one ohm-meter?
- One ohm-meter ≈ 601530493.6 Ω·cmil/ft (ohm circular mils per foot).
