About kinematic viscosity units

Kinematic viscosity is dynamic viscosity divided by density: how readily a fluid flows under its own weight. Its SI unit is the square meter per second (m²/s). Oils and fuels are rated in centistokes (cSt), equal to mm²/s; water at 20 °C is about 1 cSt.

One stokes is exactly 1 cm²/s (10⁻⁴ m²/s), and 1 cSt is exactly 1 mm²/s. One ft²/s is exactly 0.09290304 m²/s, or 92,903.04 cSt. To get dynamic viscosity in cP, multiply cSt by the density in g/cm³.

Frequently asked questions

Is cSt the same as mm²/s?
Yes. One centistokes is exactly one square millimeter per second.
How do I convert cSt to cP?
Multiply by the density in g/cm³. An oil of 100 cSt with a density of 0.87 g/cm³ is 87 cP.
How many stokes are in one square meter per second?
One square meter per second = 10000 St (stokes).
How many centistokes are in one square meter per second?
One square meter per second = 1000000 cSt (centistokes).
How many square feet per second are in one square meter per second?
One square meter per second ≈ 10.76391042 ft²/s (square feet per second).
