About magnetic field strength units
Magnetic field strength, written H, describes the magnetizing field produced by currents, independent of the material. Its SI unit is the ampere per meter (A/m). Magnet coercivity is usually given in kA/m or kOe.
H is a different quantity from magnetic flux density B, measured in tesla or gauss. The CGS unit of H is the oersted: 1 Oe = 1000/(4π) A/m, about 79.577 A/m. Converting H to B needs the permeability of the material; in vacuum, and very nearly in air, 1 Oe corresponds to about 1 G (0.1 mT).
