About magnetic flux density units
Magnetic flux density, written B, is what most people mean by the strength of a magnetic field. Its SI unit is the tesla (T); the CGS unit is the gauss (G), exactly 10⁻⁴ T, so 1 T = 10,000 G. The Earth's field is about 25 to 65 µT (0.25 to 0.65 G), and hospital MRI scanners commonly use 1.5 T or 3 T.
B is different from magnetic field strength H, measured in A/m or oersteds. Converting tesla to oersted needs the permeability of the material; in vacuum and air, 1 G corresponds to about 1 Oe. Magnetometers and EMF meters often read in µT or mG: 1 mG is exactly 0.1 µT.

- How do I convert gauss to tesla?
- Divide by 10,000. One gauss is exactly 0.0001 T, so 5,000 G is 0.5 T. Going the other way, 1 µT is exactly 10 mG.
- Is gauss the same as oersted?
- No. Gauss measures flux density B and oersted measures field strength H. In vacuum or air, a field of 1 Oe produces about 1 G, so the numbers match there, but not inside magnetic materials.
- How many milliteslas are in one tesla?
- One tesla = 1000 mT (milliteslas).
- How many microteslas are in one tesla?
