About moment of inertia units

Moment of inertia (rotational inertia) measures how hard it is to change an object's rotation. It depends on the mass and how far it sits from the axis. Its SI unit is the kilogram square meter (kg·m²).

One lb·ft² is about 0.042140 kg·m², and one kg·cm² is exactly 0.0001 kg·m². This page covers mass moment of inertia. The area moment of inertia used for beam bending (second moment of area, in m⁴ or in⁴) is a different quantity.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert lb·ft² to kg·m²?
Multiply by about 0.0421401. One kg·m² is about 23.730 lb·ft².
Is moment of inertia the same as second moment of area?
No. Mass moment of inertia (kg·m²) describes resistance to rotation. Second moment of area (m⁴) describes a cross-section's resistance to bending. They cannot be converted into each other.
How many kilogram square centimeters are in one kilogram square meter?
One kilogram square meter = 10000 kg·cm² (kilogram square centimeters).
How many pound square feet are in one kilogram square meter?
One kilogram square meter ≈ 23.7303604 lb·ft² (pound square feet).
How many ounce square inches are in one kilogram square meter?
One kilogram square meter ≈ 54674.75037 oz·in² (ounce square inches).
