About torque units

Torque, also called moment of force, is the turning effect of a force about an axis: force times the distance from the axis. Its SI unit is the newton meter (N·m).

One pound-force foot is exactly 1.3558179483314004 N·m and equals 12 pound-force inches. One kilogram-force meter is exactly 9.80665 N·m. Torque and energy share the same dimensions, but torque is written in N·m, never in joules.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert lb-ft to N·m?
Multiply by about 1.35582. For example, 100 lbf·ft is about 135.58 N·m. One N·m is about 0.73756 lbf·ft.
Are foot-pounds and pound-feet the same?
For torque, yes: both mean one pound-force acting at one foot. Engineers often write lbf·ft for torque and ft·lbf for energy to keep the two apart.
Is moment of force the same as torque?
Yes. Both are force times lever arm and both use N·m, so this page covers both.
How many kilogram-force meters are in one newton meter?
One newton meter ≈ 0.1019716213 kgf·m (kilogram-force meters).
How many kilogram-force centimeters are in one newton meter?
One newton meter ≈ 10.19716213 kgf·cm (kilogram-force centimeters).
How many pound-force feet are in one newton meter?
One newton meter ≈ 0.7375621493 lbf·ft (pound-force feet).
